    Halifax Health is seeking a Business Specialist for the Medical Oncology Department.

    Summary

    The Business Specialist provides efficient communication for the department.  Assists with maintenance of records and statistics.  Performs secretarial, receptionist, medical records, and scheduling functions for the Medical Oncology department.

    Job Qualifications

      • High School Diploma or GED equivalent required.
      • Five (5) years office experience to acquire the knowledge and skills that would be necessary to perform assigned position responsibilities.
      • Skills in typing, word processing, computers, general office procedures and good communications skills are essential.

     

    Job Duties and Responsibilities

    • Provides efficient telephone communications

      • Answers telephone effectively
      • Screens calls and routes to appropriate personnel
      • Takes messages neatly and correctly and distributes promptly
      • Takes correct, accurate information on physician consults being called in
      • Monitors phones placed on hold to prevent excessive wait time
      • Places calls as necessar
    • Greets patients and visitors on arrival.
    • Locates the patients charts upon arrival and place in rack.
    • Monitors patients waiting in lobby to keep them informed of delays, etc.
    • Assists with maintenance of records and statistic
      • Copy patient records on reques
      • Has new patients complete necessary forms
    • Provides correct distribution of incoming and outgoing mail, x-rays, lab reports, prescriptions, etc.
      • Correctly distributes incoming mai
      • Assists with preparation of outgoing mai
      • Correctly batches and forward
      • Keeps physician and nurses informed of incoming labs and x-ray results
      • Assists patients or visitors who are picking up prescriptions, records, etc
    • Schedules physician visits and appointments for patients.
    • Schedules outside testing, appointments, etc., for patients.
    • Advises the appropriate person via email or fax when imaging has been ordered so that authorization is obtained, if applicable.
    • Sends reminder to appropriate staff if the patient is going to receive a new regimen or change in their existing treatment.
    • Assist in covering the front desk, or other areas, if necessary.
    • Refers patient to financial counselor and registration to update records.
    • Trains new personnel for front desk or area.
    • Operates and extracts data from the departmental computer systems: ARIA, TDS, Meditech, etc.
    • Maintains department files.
    • Performs other related duties, as assigned.
