Overview

Halifax Health is seeking a Hyperbaric Technician for the Hyperbaric Oxygen Department.

Summary

The HBO Technologist is a professional who is responsible for providing and supervising direct and indirect total hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) to various age groups. Monitors patients while in the hyperbaric chambers and delivers medical care appropriate to the level of his/her medical training.  Utilizes the APIE process (assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating) in achieving the goals of the HBOT department.  Adheres to all rules and regulations of all applicable local, state and federal agencies and accrediting bodies.

Job Qualifications

  • Basic assessment skills, including blood glucose monitoring (BGM)

  • Hyperbaric Chamber experience

  • Computer software, excel, Microsoft office and EMR

  • Pre or post hire completion of an approved hyperbaric medicine introductory course from an approved HBOT training course.  If pre-hire, the course must be within the past 5 years from the date of hire.

  • Current Certified Hyperbaric Technologist (CHT), Certified Hyperbaric Registered Nurse (CHRN) preferred

  • Minimum of Emergency Medical technician (EMT), Paramedic ( PM), , Registered Nurse (RN), Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN),  Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN), Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), Certified Hyperbaric Specialist (CHS), Respiratory Therapist

  • Wound Care experience preferred but not required

Job Duties and Responsibilities

  • Performs safe and effective operation of the hyperbaric chambers and system components such as back-up gas supply, TcpO2 monitor, compressed air cylinders.

  • Administers hyperbaric oxygen therapy to patients as prescribed by the hyperbaric physician.

  • Ensures timely adherence to the treatment schedule to minimize patient inconvenience.  Triage telephone calls and route to correct staff member.

  • Assist with monoplace patient prep and treatment profile.  Provide technical expertise to physicians and staff.

  • Process/maintain stock of hyperbaric supplies.  Maintain files of equipment maintenance and inspection.

  • Participates in practice changes as a result of performance improvement activities.  Demonstrates accurate documentation and monitoring of activities as needed.  Supports quality standards and initiatives set by the department.

  • Follows CDC isolation guidelines, demonstrates appropriate use of PPE, performs hand washing according to policy and enforces safety regulations.

  • Demonstrates communication skills appropriate to adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients; identifying patient knowledge deficits and contributing to education.

  • Responsible for the safe delivery of care to patients in a hyperbaric chamber

  • Reports directly to the Nurse Manager for the Center for Advanced Wound Healing and Hyperbaric Medicine.

  • Able to function independently with indirect supervision from Manager. 

  • Supervises the patients in the chamber throughout their treatment
